Had a total "AWW YISS" moment when I didn't hear a single creak or squeek. And now a dynamo hub! I'd have to redo the whole brake line system then.
I get compliments wherever I ride my PUBLIC bike. Hey there, this is Daniel from PUBLIC. I'm running with them off right now but would say the biggest improvement you could probably make on the front fenders is to attach them to the fork by having them screw directly into the underside of the head tube. The chain also stretched after about six months. But at this point, I need something more reliable and more built like a tank.

Having an extra few inches gave me room to breathe and made the fit much better. Over the course of a year, I have put in more than that in either replacement parts or upgrades. For all the classic styling of the bicycle, it's a shame they didn't include a rear fender reflector like Linus has. The kickstand sucks. The fenders are OK but the front one can be a pain because the L bracket secures to the caliper brake set. I love the looks of the public bike and have considered getting matching red ones for me and my SO. Velo Orange front wheel stabilizer. I've done up to 30 miles on it in a day but average daily rider during the summer is 10-15 miles and in the winter 5-10. The stock ones are just fine. But it does increase our cost and they are one of the more finicky parts to keep perfectly aligned, fender struts getting bumped and bent and fenders rubbing on tires is a common issue with all kinds of fenders. 7. I sort of regret getting a derailleur drive instead of internal hub and have thought of converting over. I replaced those with just Walnut Studiolo leather grips about six months in.
I'm not hard on the bike in terms of jumping curbs or such, I do hit my share of potholes living in a major city but having to true the wheels just about every month is annoying.

Perfect for around town: dressed up or dressed down!
I haven't had any mechanical issues other than the fender issue you mentioned. No matter what your next bike is, thanks for riding PUBLIC and I hope that upgraded V7 will stay useful for years to come.
Probably the only other drawback is that the one local dealer who carries PUBLIC bicycles is really hostile towards owners who bought their bikes direct. I did one trek that was about 40 miles going up the C&O canal tow path and back. I really appreciate how thoroughly you reviewed this.
Our long term vision is to help make US city streets look more like Amsterdam with more and more people choosing bikes, walking, and public transit over cars. I'm CONSTANTLY having to true my wheels, it drives me crazy. I'm not going to sell it when I do get a replacement though because 1. I also didn't like the spongy vinyl handlebar grips they have on there. Thanks a lot for sharing your real world experiences with your V7. But the wheel issue bothers me... you shouldn't have that many problems with the rims/wheels/axles that soon. I have another friend who has a C7i that made me want to get a PUBLIC in the first place and she has never had any major issue with it at all. So I choose not to get any service nor products from him just because he's a dick. The Shimano Nexus 7 gear derailleur system has been rock solid however. One intangible positive from the whole experience is that it "forced" me to learn about bikes and their mechanics. I figure I've already gotten my money's worth. The fenders issue is tough, because they look great and are definitely better than most after-market fenders.
Being from Portland myself I'm pretty convinced of the necessity of full fenders, and I think it adds to the bike's great value and style to have matching full fenders included, without having to buy and install an aftermarket set. Sorry to hear about the unfriendly service from the local bike shop in your area that sells our bikes, our online business model is pretty disruptive in the bike industry and we try to work with independent bike shops that share our excitement for friendly service, affordable prices, social media and e-commerce, and encouraging new bikers.
